How Showing Leadership Can Accelerate Your Career
Many of my clients are disheartened at work because they tell me are working really hard but not getting promoted to high roles. They tell me they network and do all the “right” things but they are not getting anywhere. What they don’t realise is that today businesses are not looking to promote the hardest worker into leadership roles but rather they are looking to promote people who exhibit leadership skills. This blog advises how showing leadership can accelerate your career.
What are the key leaderships skills?
Leadership is defined in many ways, indeed a quick Google search will provide you with no less than 27 different definitions!!!
For the purpose of this blog I define leadership as “the ability to motivate a person or group of people to work together to achieve a common goal.” To be seen as a leader you need to exhibit six (6) essential leadership qualities:
- Communication – A good leader must be able to communicate clearly and effectively with their team to ensure everyone is on the same page.
- Decision Making – A leader should be able to make informed decisions that align with the team’s objectives and goals.
- Delegation – Effective delegation is crucial to managing a team’s workload and ensuring that tasks are completed efficiently.
- Time Management – A leader should have excellent time-management skills to maximize productivity and ensure that deadlines are met.
- Empathy – A leader who can understand and connect with their team members on a personal level can create a positive work environment and increase team morale.
- Creativity – A leader must be able to think of creative solutions to problems.
As John Quincy Adams once said, “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” A great leader can inspire their team to achieve their full potential and create a positive impact in the workplace.
How leadership skills drive your career
Developing and exhibiting these leadership skills can significantly accelerate your career, regardless of your industry or profession. These skills are highly sought after by employers as they are vital to creating and maintaining high-performing teams that can deliver results. Below are some ways in which leadership skills can accelerate your career:
- Increased Opportunities for Advancement: Good leadership skills can set you apart from your peers and increase your chances of getting promoted. When you possess the ability to lead and motivate a team, your employer is more likely to recognize your potential and offer you additional responsibilities and opportunities to grow.
- Improved Communication: Effective communication is a critical leadership skill that can help you build strong relationships with colleagues, clients, and stakeholders. Clear and concise communication can help you establish credibility and gain the trust of others, ultimately leading to more significant career opportunities.
- Better Decision-Making: A leader who can make informed and strategic decisions can drive their team towards success. When you possess strong decision-making skills, you become a valuable asset to your employer, who will trust you to make critical choices that benefit the company.
- Increased Productivity: Good leadership skills can help you manage your time effectively and prioritize tasks. This ability can help you become more productive, which can lead to more significant contributions to your team and, in turn, more recognition from your employer.
- Improved Team Morale: A leader who can inspire and motivate their team can create a positive work environment, leading to improved team morale. When team members feel engaged and supported, they are more likely to work harder and contribute to the team’s success. As a result, your employer will recognize your leadership abilities and may offer you additional opportunities to lead and manage.
- Better Problem-Solving: Good leadership skills can help you identify and solve problems effectively. When you can think critically and find solutions to complex issues, you become a valuable asset to your employer. Problem-solving skills can help you stand out in your role, increasing your chances of being recognized for your contributions and offered additional opportunities.
- Stronger Relationships: Effective leadership skills can help you build strong relationships with colleagues and stakeholders. When you can connect with others on a personal level, you can create trust and rapport, which can lead to more significant career opportunities.
As John C. Maxwell once said, “Leadership is not about titles, positions, or flowcharts. It is about one life influencing another.” By developing basic leadership skills, you can influence and inspire others to achieve their full potential, creating a positive impact in the workplace. This impact can lead to increased recognition, opportunities for advancement, and a fulfilling and rewarding career.
